It was almost 9PM when I got home. I dragged myself inside and kicked off my shoes next to a pile of teenagersâ runners and flip-flops. So much for my hopes of a quiet night in. Sighing, I walked into the living room. âGreetings and salutations, youngsters.â
âHi, Miri.â Sadieâs boyfriend Caleb dumped chips into a bowl. I nodded in approval at todayâs T-shirt offering of Calvin and Hobbes. His parents had raised him well. âSparky, your momâs home!â
My niece Nessa peeled herself off the couch where sheâd been watching the twins, Aiden and Olivia, shoot zombies. Eli must have loaned us his game console. âAuntie Em,â Nessa said, using the nickname sheâd given me after I first showed her and Sadie Wizard of Oz when they were little. She preened like a cat, showing off her new pixie cut. âWhat do you think?â
Cutting off six inches of black hair gave the seventeen-year-old a fresher and more mature look that made those Chu cheekbones pop. Poor Sadie had missed those genes, getting stuck with my rounder cheeks. âLove it.â
âNow to convince Mom to let me get a nose piercing.â Nessa crossed her fingers.
âGood luck with that.â
She rolled her eyes. âToo true.â
Sadie wandered out of the kitchen, her arms filled with pop cans that she deposited on the coffee table.
âGreen or purple?â Her friend Kai held up two nail polish bottles.
âDefinitely purple,â my daughter said.
âTold you,â Kai said to their other friend Emily, a lanky blonde.
âFine.â The girl placed her hands flat on the table for him to do her nails. âBut you didnât have to be so bossy about it.â
I snapped my fingers. âHands off that bottle, Kai. Youâre a menace.â
âCome on, Miri. I was twelve when I spilled the pink polish. And besides.â He raised an imperious eyebrow. âThe floors you got after looked way better than that ugly carpeting. Really, I did you a favor.â
âSpill a drop and youâll end up like Sadieâs sister.â
He waved me off with a flick of his black-painted nails.
âChild?â I tugged on Sadieâs elbow. âA moment?â
I pulled her into the kitchen and stopped short. âNadi, why are you making grilled cheese?â
The petite girl in a bright green headscarf flipped one of the sandwiches browning on the stove. âBecause you were out of peanut butter.â
Not what I meant, but this was what happened when you spent years encouraging your daughterâs friends to make themselves at home. âJust put everything back in the fridge when youâre done.â
âWill do.â
I motioned for Sadie to follow me onto the back porch, shutting the door for privacy. âYou know I donât mind you having friends over, but youâre supposed to give me a heads-up.â
âText and voice mail.â She crossed her arms. âWhatâs the point of you having a pricey cell plan, young lady, if you arenât going to check your notifications?â
âVery funny.â I checked my phone to find two unread texts and one voice mail from her. âAll right, my bad. Just keep everyone downstairs and out by eleven, okay?â
âDeal.â She skipped off back to her friends.
